Shifting bags in overhead bins are always a safety concern for airline passengers. But the problems usually occur after take-off.
A man is suing Southwest Airlines for $49,000 after suffering a compressed disc when a piece of luggage fell on him while boarding a flight to Las Vegas, according to FOX News.
According to the lawsuit, Jeffery Reinhardt was on a Southwest plane at Portland International Airport on Jan. 17, 2013 when another passenger tried to fit a piece of luggage into the bin above him. When a flight attendant tried to assist the passenger, a piece of baggage fell on Reinhardt who was already sitting down.
After the incident, Reinhardt claims he suffered several medical issues including a compressed disc.
The lawsuit faults Southwest for allowing a passenger to carry a piece of luggage that was too large to fit in an overhead bin, and failing to train flight attendants properly for dealing with overstuffed bins.
