Where China will really hurt the USA is through tariffs on the agricultural products they purchase from us. Like it or not, a large percentage of US farmers rely heavily on sales to China, and the tariffs will seriously hurt them. There are NO winners in a trade war, that's why people that actually understand international economics don't start trade wars.

The biggest and most difficult to overcome issue is... one of ego. Trump started this nonsense, and keeps tweeting that he wants a trade war, so the chance of his backing away is about as great as.... Trump picking a qualified cabinet secretary? ... or perhaps having him keep his campaign to protect the DACA kids that he is now rushing to deport? .... or perhaps simply having him admit that 90% of his claims du jour are lies! On a scale of 1 to 100, that isn't even a positive number. No, there is little, if any, wiggle room here, so as they used to say in ancient Greece, "Gird up your loins" and enjoy what is to come as best as you can, and as for me? Well, I'm looking for a new computer and a new flat screen today, before prices can spike....

Boeing claimed the CSeries was an "existential threat" to the entire 737 program. I wonder what melodramatic term they'll come up with for the Chinese tariff. The difference is that this time, it's something that really will hurt Boeing.

IMHO this is just face-saving saber rattling. They're just angry that an American president finally stood up to them. Beijing would never risk hurting China's burgeoning airlines by making B737s prohibitively expensive. And Airbus isn't an option since they aren't able to produce aircraft soon enough. This will all blow over once face-to-face negotiations take place.

Don't hold your breath.
Politicians that understand trade do not start trade wars.

Trump standing up to the Chinese?
I suggest you have a look at what we sell them and see how much we will suffer for this incredible stupidity.

You got it. If we don’t make the first move nothing will change. Just like the axiom about expecting a different result while doing the same thing.

The first move about what?..How to do damage to a countries trading partners and allies? Just curious Wallace as to what make cellphone you use or TV you watch or computer parts that you get onto the internet with?

Is not one of our allies. Terrible trade deal done by moron politicians who sold out for a buck. No pain no gain.

China IS 1 of your trading partners AND you never answered the question!

I’m sure they love being a trading partner. They tariff the crap out of many of our products and get a pass on theirs. Good deal eh?

Oh, forgot. The first move to a better trade deal. They’ll cave.

Sure would love to see hard proof, of China getting free tariffs from the US, since BOTH countries are suppose to abide by the WTO. What is really funny, for 1 example, is that steel and aluminum coming back into the US from China is mostly US steel and aluminum to begin with...mega tons of scrap metal sent to China!
And again, you did not answer my question!

You are right on the steel and alum. They recycle in plants with no EPA, OSHA, and basically slave labor. Can’t do that here. But hey, it’s cheaper.

And the US plants buy it up, just like western civilization buys up China made electronics etc yet doesnt think twice! And US companies send the scrap to China, so why not get them to stop sending it first.

To each his own on economics. I think we have bad trade deals that need fixing. China is a good place to start. I also predict Boeing will be just fine. Blue skies sir.
