Pregnant, deaf woman punched along with her service dog on airplane

Übermittelt

Chaos on-board an airplane heading to Orlando when police say a man punched a service dog in the face because his wife was allergic. He also hit the animal's owner, who is deaf, and pregnant. (www.wthr.com) Mehr...

No one has been arrested... I guess this country is perfectly fine with people attacking dogs, pregnant women, deaf people, and children. What a sewer...

It's a good thing the dog he punched was a good natured Great Dane. My German Shepard does not take kindly to people raising their fists in my direction.

I think it's more interesting to note that those here who are against service animals are completely silent on this incident, let alone the assault of one that is covered by the ACAA and ADA.

I am not against true service animals, and in this case, it appears the animal is a bona fide service animal. It is the so-called "emotional support" animals that I am against, the ones that you can get a certificate for $75.00 from an internet doctor that I am against. They are generally not trained, not certified and are a result of their owners taking advantage of the system.

I am not against service animals at all. I just believe that they should be documented. That being said, this is abhorrent behavior and that there has not been an arrest is, in my opinion, ridiculous but, indicative of today's society. No one cares about anyone but themselves these days, and that goes for the owners of "service" animals, too. If you are blind and need a guide dog, and have to travel on an airplane, fine, I have no issues for a well trained and documented animal. It's not the animals that I do not like, it's their owners. I have to have photo documentation before I go on an airplane, so, what is wrong with having the same requirement for "service" animals? The answer: There is nothing wrong with it. I have said in other posts on the subject that I have no issues with documented animals being true service animals. There are dogs, cats, horses, skunks, ferrets and all manner of creatures out there that play that roll, and guess what sets them apart from the chihuahuas and the Pomeranians and other purse dogs? The owners. They are actually trying to provide a service to other people, and they are not thinking about just themselves. Now with this case, the dog punching jerk should have been thrown off the flight and charged with battery and animal cruelty.

That is the whole point of the argument. The ACAA requires certain animals to have documentation, and when prompted (read: demanded) by the airline, the owners must produce it, otherwise they don't get allowed on board.

From the ACAA:

(e) If a passenger seeks to travel with an animal that is used as an emotional support or psychiatric service animal, you are not required to accept the animal for transportation in the cabin unless the passenger provides you current documentation (i.e., no older than one year from the date of the passenger's scheduled initial flight) on the letterhead of a licensed mental health professional (e.g., psychiatrist, psychologist, licensed clinical social worker, including a medical doctor specifically treating the passenger's mental or emotional disability) stating the following:

(1) The passenger has a mental or emotional disability recognized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders—Fourth Edition (DSM IV);

(2) The passenger needs the emotional support or psychiatric service animal as an accommodation for air travel and/or for activity at the passenger's destination;

(3) The individual providing the assessment is a licensed mental health professional, and the passenger is under his or her professional care; and

(4) The date and type of the mental health professional's license and the state or other jurisdiction in which it was issued.

(f) You are never required to accommodate certain unusual service animals (e.g., snakes, other reptiles, ferrets, rodents, and spiders) as service animals in the cabin. With respect to all other animals, including unusual or exotic animals that are presented as service animals (e.g., miniature horses, pigs, monkeys), as a carrier you must determine whether any factors preclude their traveling in the cabin as service animals (e.g., whether the animal is too large or heavy to be accommodated in the cabin, whether the animal would pose a direct threat to the health or safety of others, whether it would cause a significant disruption of cabin service, whether it would be prohibited from entering a foreign country that is the flight's destination). If no such factors preclude the animal from traveling in the cabin, you must permit it to do so. However, as a foreign carrier, you are not required to carry service animals other than dogs.

The airline has a considerable amount of power already in codified law, but have just been to pigheaded to use it. All they have to do is exercise their powers enumerated to them by this section and kick out any other animals that don't meet that criteria, let alone the passengers that don't meet that criteria.

And I agree with the arrest and charges.

I am so glad Florida uped their animal abuse laws..depending on which jurisdiction lays the charges, "it" is probably looking at a lot more than 1 felony charge..Assaulting a pregnant person, young children and the dog?

Leave punching the dog out of it. The guy punched a pregnant woman. I bet it wasn’t his first and won’t be his last.
Great excuse “my wife is allegic to dogs”... so the perp is considerate towards women?
