I miss those L1011's.

BWIA went bankrupt and closed on 12/31/2006. I assume this is an historic photo.

Paul - note the caption under the photo - "Slide Scan 1999" .... I'd say 19 years could classify as "historic" :)

I wish these planes would still be flying!

Way better than the DC10s because the engines were actually built into the tail fin. Way stronger way better

I loved these birds. I had the pleasure to fly several long haul (with fuel stop) with them, mainly with Airlanka and LTU. I remember that one LTU l1011 had a downstairs lounge with a bar.
As already mentioned - much better than DC10. We called it the 'wispering giant' because the noise polution from the three engines was so effectively reduced compared to other birds from this time.
Recently I noticed that one L1011 became famouse as a rocket launcher for SpaceX. If I am not totally wrong it was one L1011 I had the pleasure to fly with in its previous passenger plane life.
While the L1011 became very very rare the DC10 / MD11 are still in the air at least as cargo planes.

Lockheed's last great money losing venture in commercial aviation never certified with any engine other than the Rolls RB-211. Rolls went bankrupt but was bailed out by the UK Government and Lockheed to keep the program alive, good airplane but had its share of serious fuselage cracking. I was at the Boeing Aviation Museum in Seattle recently and they have a Lockheed Constellation on display something Lockheed does not have along with any of the Lockheed planes like the C-141 which was a great plane, all dead and gone

A gorgeous plane way ahead of it's time. First trip on a jet for me back when my hair was not so gray (TWA). Married to the RB211 as the only engine at the time that would fit in the tail assembly if I remember correctly. Thanks for sharing!

Beauty. I flew on one as a pax in 1978 TWA, JFK to LAX. RB211 started with a ball of smoke out the tail, looked like a Connie starting. Great, spacious interior. Lockheed actually purchased that S Duct technology from Boeing, 727.

Delta flight 191, August 2, 1985, DFW. Sadly I lost my older brother on that flight. Always think about you Bunky!

@Paul Wisgerghof - BWee did not go bankrupt & close - they rebranded as Caribbean Airlines - they no longer fly the Tristar, they are using 737-800s and ATRs

I miss those.
BWIA imploded because the corporate executives and the unions couldn't agree. Of course, money was the underlying basis for the disagreements.

Flew on Pan Am's 1011s twice only, First Class only, circa 12.18.1984, on Pan Am Round the World segments MIA-LAX (movie star flights), Flight 5, and, return circa 01.02.1985, LAX-MIA, Flight 6. According to the FA, movie star Charo was to be on the OB flight, seated next to me, but, allegedly didn't make it. So, a young hot but stinky, unbathed female sat in the aisle seat, and, she claimed to be one of the females on David Lee Roth's "California Girls" video. Never could find her raunchy self on the video. I still remember her full name (D.P.).

Thank you all for the comments. The picture was taken on my 40th birthday.
In LHR you would not have been able to give me a better present :-)

BWIA did not really go bankrupt it was government owned and lost of Trinidad Government hands in the money. With no local airline left and help by British Airways now there is Caribbean Airlines. Actually same pilots, flight attendants, mechanics etc., but not that government hands in the pot. Doing better, onetime has improved but needs further improvement.

Jakob, it was actually Orbital Sciences who launched their Pegasus rockets from an L1011. They started using this aircraft back in the 1990s, if I remember correctly. Here's the link to a Wikipedia article on it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pegasus_(rocket).

These trijets used to be the most beautiful aircrafts in the skies.
