Ilyushin Il-62 (DDRSEW) - June 19, 1989: BERLIN — East Germany`s Interflug airline has partially lifted a ban on flying its Soviet-built Ilyushin IL-62 airliners despite a crash Saturday in which 17 people were killed and dozens injured. The official ADN news agency said Sunday that five of Interflug`s 11 remaining IL-62s had been inspected and cleared by aviation experts and two took off from East Berlin`s Schoenefeld Airport for Singapore and Havana during the night. The agency said specialists were examining the flight recorder recovered from the skeletal remains of Flight 102, which crashed and burned on takeoff Saturday. The plane was carrying 113 people. ADN said 17 people died, including a farmer working in a field, and 36 people are in the hospital, 15 of them seriously injured. Dozens of people, including a 2-month-old baby, escaped unhurt before the fuel-laden aircraft was engulfed in flames. It was Interflug`s first accident since 1975.br /a rel=nofollow href=http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1989-06-19/news/8902100678_1_il-crash-adnhttp://articles.chicagotribune.com/1989-06-19/news/8902100678_1_il-crash-adn/a
