A "Double Five" pic from the past. Bravos, Boss. I flew a DAL TriStar from KDAL to KJFK and then a DAL B722 from KJFK to KBOS (when I was stationed at The Hansc) and I had taken pics of both but lost them when the film was accidentally exposed. This brings back wonderful memories of flights on two great jets. And the "Classic Widget' livery has always been my fave Delta paint scheme.

According to the FAA, this one was deregistered and exported to Kyrgyzstan in 2005.

Tristars were gorgeous aircraft. Lovely shot.

Lockheed's LAST designed and built passenger aircraft, they lost so much money on the program that the Board at the time said " That's it, we are OUT of the passenger aircraft business, let Boeing and others have it, which opened the door for Airbus to develop into the world's largest passenger aircraft company. The L-1011 was never certified with any engine other than the Rolls RB 211

I'm sure someone will disagree, but by all accounts I've heard it was a fantastic airplane. I think I flew as a passenger on one once, probably JFK-DFW, but I don't remember details, I was just thrilled to be on a "jumbo jet".

Beautiful aircraft. I flew several commercial flights after 500+ flight test hours during which I got the AHRS Attitude and Heading Reference System FAA certification. Never was unlucky enough to fly on a DC-10. Yeah, I’m very prejudiced!!

One of my all-time aircraft. I loved the sound of the RB 211's during takeoff as I always sat in seat 13A so I could hear that whine as they took off. I flew out of Boston on the L1011 many a time. Great memories thanks.

Epic...

My all time favourite airplane. Flew it many times YWG-LHR-YWG polar with Air Canada on their 500 series. Landed in LHR after one epic jetstream assisted flight 2 hours early!!!! Amazing stability always and as a usually nervous passenger, always felt totally safe on the L-1011.

Can't help but to love the 3-holers.

For six years I used to fly on a Delta L-1011 from LA to Atlanta and back every three weeks. I used to book in coach, but was frequently bumped to first. I loved that plane. Big, quiet, roomy, and the service on Delta was superb.

Thank you everyone for your kind words and thoughts. The Delta L1011 was my first plane I flew on from BOS-ATL and flew beautifully.

Was a pax on an L-1011 between Portland and Kimpo 3 times between 1991 and 1992. Loved that bird because it always brought me home!

The L-1011 was (at the time) the only passanger plane built to military specs. Four hydraulic systems and four electrical systems. Pressure vessel joints were rivited and bonded in an autoclave to prevent joint corrosion. Also first plane with Cat III autoland.

IMHO, this was the best paint scheme Delta ever used; clean and crisp!

Thanks for sharing.

I flew the tristar a few times from LAX to JFK in the '70s -- one really great experience -- a real shame to see them pass into history
