Abort, abort, abort: Hackers posing as air traffic controllers tricking pilots above Melbourne

There’s been a major security breach at Melbourne airport with radio communications to incoming passenger flights hacked.

7 News understands 15 incoming flights at Melbourne Tullamarine and Avalon airports have been targeted by someone pretending to be an air traffic controller.

The Australian Federal Police have issued a warning about unauthorised radio transmissions and have launched an investigation into the incidents.

As a result of the unlawful interference with air traffic control broadcasts, over several weeks, the AFP has issued a call for public help for any information that will result in the identification and arrest of the person responsible.

7 News understands the person responsible was illegally using a portable transmitter, possibly from a parked car nearby.

During the interference aircraft have been radioed on their final approach.

A person pretends they are calling from the control tower and order the aircraft to abort their landing and perform what is called ‘a go-around’, a last minute emergency tactic.

The AFP have said this is a very dangerous and foolhardy action.

They have stressed none of the aircraft involved were put in danger, but they were eager to find the person responsible.

Those responsible could face up to 20 years jail.
