Derby’s Rolls-Royce has secured an engine deal with an aircraft leasing firm worth more than £300 million.

AerCap has placed an order with the engineering giant for Trent 1000 TEN engines to power a fleet of 10 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

The Dublin-based firm also has an option on a further five Trent-powered 787s and the overall cost of the deal is £323 million.

The Trent 1000 TEN (Thrust, Efficiency and New Technology) is the latest version of the Trent 1000.

It incorporates technology from two other Rolls-Royce engine programmes - the Trent XWB and the Advance.

The engine, which is a more powerful and fuel-efficient version of the Trent 1000, has been devised and developed at Rolls-Royce’s civil aerospace division in Sinfin. It also produces half the noise.

The Trent 1000 TEN is considered to be one of the engines that will play a key role in Rolls-Royce’s future growth.

It started powering passenger services towards the end of last year after being granted full flight certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency in the summer following a rigorous series of tests.

Three airlines took almost simultaneous delivery of aircraft fitted with the new engine in November. They were Norwegian, Singaporean carrier Scoot and Air New Zealand.

Philip Scruggs, president and chief commercial officer at AerCap, which leases aircraft to around 200 customers in 80 countries, said: “We are pleased to provide our customers with the most modern, fuel-efficient planes and engines in the world.

“We look forward to receiving further 787 Dreamliners powered by this latest version of Trent 1000, the Trent 1000 TEN engines.”

Dominic Horwood, Rolls-Royce’s director of customers and services (Civil Aerospace), said: “We are proud to have AerCap order further Trent 1000 engines as our latest variant goes into service.

“We continue to see customers recognise the economic benefits of our engine and its service support.”
