Several people injured when jet runs off PDK runway

Übermittelt

Several people were injured late Monday morning when a small jet ran off the end of a runway at DeKalb-Peachtree Airport. Four people were on board the Hawker Beechcraft 40 that ran off the end of Runway 20L around 10 a.m., then went through a fence before coming to rest near Dresden Road, according to Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen. Initial fire dispatch reports indicated that all four people were injured. There was reportedly 700 gallons of fuel leaking from the… (www.ajc.com) Mehr...

"The Cessna was a distraction and he felt rushed."
What a MORON!!! Some people just don't need to be pilots!!!

n.b. I'm not a pilot but have worked in a job where if you make mistakes, no one goes home. I would think that if he truly felt rushed, he would simply have gone around. Perhaps the workload was too great having to look out for a plane landing parallel - again, haven't been there. Let the report speak for itself for now and look at the final when it comes out.

Report: Pilot felt rushed before DeKalb jet wreck

"He also reported that they used up 25 to 35 percent of the runway before touchdown, and after touchdown until coming to rest, the normal brakes were continuously applied, but the effectiveness was reported as being low," the report states.

Some additional photos in this thread with the observation that reversers were not engaged and spoilers are stowed. One of the photos shows the nose gear caught in another fence across the street and no track in the grass from sliding - simply went splat.

I will be surprised if this is pilot error.

I used to be based there and saw many terrible decisions (like this one) happen. Glad nobody got hurt from the non-go-around!

Just glad that every ones okay! You can replace planes...not lives!!

I only take news media reporting as general information at best. It's usually inaccurate from aircraft accidents to politics and everything in between.

everybody got lucky on that one...Dresden Drive is very business road...the fence stopped the plane..the fence is electrified also...no doubt a rough ride
that calls for a drink to settle the nerves!

Electrified fence? Your kidding right?

Dresden Drive is a very "busy" road..that is the old Naval air station I played in when I was little...people have been fighting that airport for years..that does not help.
I love the place..they may still have the 57th fighter group restaurant..WW II nostalgia plus you could listen to the tower while you eat and watch the runway...that is as good as it gets!!

Wonder what speed he was doing through the class B airspace?

I don't understand why they had so much fuel inboard.A BE400 at max fuel doesn't hold much more than was reported on the a/c.Guess they were tanking to keep from buying fuel there. If that is correct they would have been right at 17000#Smax which would have put them over landing weight by about 1500 to 2000#s.I think the fuel onboard was way less than reported.Just the same I am very happy no one was killed in this accident and from the way it sounds the crew pulled it out of an even worse accident.

The only information the media gets for stuff like this (at least on day one of the investigation) is the max capacity of fuel the plane can carry. They didn't interview the pilot and find out how much fuel it had...they just state a number based on what it is capable of carrying.

Beech 400 can carry ~4912 lbs of fuel which equals the reported ~700 gallons. Even if full tanks it would have been ~500-700 less due to amount of fuel burned on the flight from Gasden to PDK.

One thing about a Beechjet is this and it is they seem to be a very good aircraft to fly with a well trained crew.We had two based at our airport and they never departed with a wings only load of fuel no matter where they were going.Min.trunk fuel was never less than 150 gallons(1000 #s) and we were 20 minutes from the closest airport.Flew on them numerous times since Beech first got them from Mitsubishi and loved every minute. They are little rockets on takeoff but,you better be ready should a problem arise.Looks like this crew sure was for no one lost their life and that is great.

Glad every one made it out okay... reminds me of the T-1 I saw off the end of the runway at Keesler AFB many years ago.

Beechjet 400A off runway at KPDK. Several injured.

I hate to see bent metal. N826JH departed earlier this morning from KGAD.

Vso in a 400XP is 92kias with full flaps so Vref is 120. That end of the property drops 30 feet past the threshold. A little more and he would have been in the mall across the street.

Vref is about 105, it was doing 214kts less than 300 feet AGL. With a 5 knot headwind, that's 219KTAS at <300 feet, which is 114kts above 105.

with a 5 knt headwind thats 199 knts isn't and 95 knts above 105 isn't it?....at any rate that was way to fast and I am just they made it out

KPDK jet off end of runway (pic)

The plane went through a fence at the end of the runway and onto Dresden Road, the FAA said.

What's funny is that you can see the antenna array for the ILS up on the hill still totally in-tact, even though the plane should have crashed through it...

I thought about that, too. He ended up right at the intersection of Plaster Rd and Dresden so must have passed east of the array. You can see some of the intersection curb cutout on the WSB tv site pics - here's a map. http://goo.gl/maps/Wr4Z

Apologies, I didn't funny in the laughing sense, I meant it in the "that's odd, they either went over or around it" sense...
onceastudentpilot
tim mitchell 1
well it is a great thing they missed it...with 700 gallons of fuel aboard it probably would have erupted into a huge fire ball...they probably steered the plane that direction to miss the ILS...when the plane encountered the field the gear probably collasped and they skidded until it stopped on it's own....hurt but alive

One of the eyewitnesses said it appeared he tried to go around, stalled, and fell. I'll ask a friend who lives nearby if they can describe the path in the dirt.
