Air Transat : improving finances and discusses acquiring a 737 fleet
MONTREAL—Transat A.T. Inc. has reported a big improvement in first-quarter results but the vacation tour operator remains mired in red ink as its revenue declined on reduced capacity. The Montreal-based operator of Air Transat said its net loss for the three months ended Jan. 31 was $15.1 million or 39 cents per share on a diluted basis. Time to get rid of the ancient 310's!!!!!
Well right now they are in contract with canjet who uses 737s
Yes but they still use the 310's to go to Scotland,,, time they were phased out!! I am booked on one in May!!
Air Transat currently use Canjet part of the IMP group. Their equipment Boeing 737-800W"s. They would be better served on the long haul routes by buying better wide bodied aircraft. The Canjet fleet is used primarily north and south. Those ancient A310"s should be put out to pasture.
I agree, i have to turn it around at the gate. The plane shows its age. Some of the parts such as the container motors don't work and such. Thanks to transat, we are not getting canjets with no less than 60 percent capacity on average.
Transat is alowly acquiring more used long-range A330 widebody aircraft, and redoing the cabins with a new design. These are slowly replacing the A310s. As it stands, for transatlantic flights,Transat rarely uses the A310 these days. Mostly, the A310's are on flights headed south.
The 737 planes would be for the routes south such Florida, Mexico and the Caribbean. Currently, many of these flights are being flown by Canjet. However, Transat's contract with Canjet ends on 2014. Transat is considering whether they want to renew with Canjet, or acquire their own 737 aircraft.
It's interesting how many aviation buffs are flying with Air Transat specifically to ride on an A310. They're one of the last airlines to operate them in passenger service. So... not everybody dislikes them.

Air Transat would be wise to stay with Canjet for its shorter haul routes. Canjet's fleet is modern and cost effective. Acquiring an additional 6 Boeings to augment their fleet would be, for this airline, a risky venture. Each 737 costs $90 million Canadian and it would need six. Even used 737's cost in the range of 60 million each. These costs don't include spares, training, crews etc. As the airline is not flush with cash surely it makes more sense to lease than buy.
I suspect that Transat is merely posturing in order to improve its bargaining position with Canjet. In a similar move, Canjet has been investigating operating its own flights, and has made several moves in that direction.
Truthfully, I think it would be better for both companies to sign a new contract. Canjet is currently quite reliant on Air Transat. Without them, they, would probably have to sell some of their fleet.
