Doesn't seem worth all that work to save 10% in fuel. Why have a turbo fan generate electricity to turn props? More moving parts mean more break downs. That sounds very inefficient to me.

Ten percent fuel savings is huge. Electric motors are far more reliable than any other motor.

The new GE engines that are going on the 777X give the 10% fuel savings. In the future the savings will go up. No need for an electric engine!

If Airbus has enough money laying around to fund this pipe dream they should consider repaying the stockholders (and taxpayers) for their other boondoggle, the A380!

Electric aircraft were tried in the 40's and 50's. Proven unreliable then. Nothing changes. Maybe Airbus and Siemens are interested in a bridge. I have one cheap!

CORRECT, nothing changes, for YOU, if you refuse to embrace science.

Diesel trains are actually Diesel/Electric always have been; where the Diesel powers generators, that power electric motors on the bogies.

You may find an education helpful.

Randy,
Believe it or not I knew that before you were born!! I'am sure I'm older than you. The same with newer passenger ships, etc. But flying through the air is much different than being on the sea or on the ground. I think you can appreciate that. Your wise attitude isn't appreciated as well! Grow up!

Being an electrician I know about diesel electric trains. I also know that some submarines of ww2 were helped by this technology. I also know that electric engines do not have the thrust to weight ratio that is required for flight. This was tried by several research centers.

Obviously it does work as indicated by the article and Boeing is working on it as well.

Are you a flat earther?

Perhaps you don't know the FULL story of doing the near impossible of going to the moon when none of the technology existed.... or are you a doubter the we did that?

Galileo was imprisoned for saying the earth was not the center of the universe.

Thirty years ago a sustainable Fusion reactor was said to be impossible... it's now very possible and within reach.

Doubters and people with your mindset have ALWAYS retard civilizations advancement.

Man, why the insults? I don't think the technology is there. Have I insulted you? But if you want to trade insults. We can.

Maybe you should look at the LA Times Sept. 9 2016 article. And remember I am an electrician and Electricity is Magic.
