It's far too early to tell, but perhaps caught in a microburst? Would that model have been Doppler equipped??

flew with a pilot in AF who came out of the bottom of a T-storm in his younger days... he refused to depart Korat during a storm..and we waited and hour before departing... over the next year lost 2 EC121Rs to microbursts... happy I flew with our guy

The flight sj182 was delayed for almost an hour due (flightradar24) to heavy rains at the airport per Bloomberg. Using zoom.earth you can access the satelite images for Jakarta yesterday including Rain Radar. At 639 UTC the storms are over the airport. At 739 UTC the storms moved to the northwest. The flight path appears to be toward some of the heavy rain cells.

There's a Mount Merapi that's erupting and south east of Jakarta. Backdating weather on ventusky.com winds aloft could of had ash on the flight path. I wonder if other planes took the same altitude and path.

Indonsian airlines had previously banned from US and European skies due to issues that were not life friendly. Those restrictions were lifed several years ago. It will be interesting to see if such restrictions are imposed again.

Wow, guess it's time for you to STFU with your usual nasty comments. Thanks for being so on top of things, idiot.
