Delta Air Lines Returns to Its Used-Jet Roots
Delta added numerous used aircraft to its fleet in the years after the Great Recession in order to limit capital expenditures. In recent years, the airline shifted its focus to simplifying its fleet with modern, fuel-efficient jets. The COVID-19 pandemic has created opportunities for Delta to snap up cheap used jets while continuing to make progress on its fleet simplification plan. No different than buying a low mileage car off a surrendered lease at least until the recent chip shortage drove up prices. Until recently all my cars were ex-rentals...clean and well maintained. Delta is jumping into the game early so will have pick of the available aircraft....and they have the opportunity to unload some of their owned aircraft.
