A 10% stake in Alitalia doesn't really seem like much..but then again delta itself is a mixed bag from the takeover of northwest, and even after a few years, they are straigtening things out..i can see the italians wanting a bigger investment as delta is a recognized world brand, and they could advertise "partnering" with delta airlines..certainly they wouldn't want them to be a "silent" partner!
Delta did the same thing with Pan Am. Pan am was going bankrupt and Detla stood up and was like lets help and gave them a cash injection. Then later after own most of their stock they said they werent helping them out anymore and then basically took over there routes over the Atlantic.
