In 1948 Northwest had a flight from Tokyo to Hong Kong via Naha, Okinawa and Taipei, Formosa using a Douglas DC-4. It was, I believe, a weekly flight. Over the door of the plane to Hong Kong from Taipei was a sign reading "Hong Kong Airways," as NWA had no rights to fly to Hong Kong. NWA pilots flew the plane of course. I was then an 18-year-old radar operator on Okinawa and had a brother-in-law who flew the route as a purser.

Hong Kong Airlines' parent organization is Hainan Airlines.

This is a big story in that there is a lot of traffic between HKG, mainland China, and Canada. Cathay Pacific and Air Canada have a big lock on the traffic, although many use United via the US. I flew Hong Kong Airlines last year between HKG & PEK and was impressed as it was (very) cheap, and the service was very good (seat-back personal entertainment systems, full meal service, disinfectant wipes, etc.). $634 CAD round-trip return fares will definitely undercut the existing players.

Westjet already has codeshare agreements with Cathay Pacific and Hainan Airlines (HK Air's parent). It will be interesting to see if agreements change or a new agreement is made.

CX/AC do not have 'a lock on the traffic'. In addition to CX & AC's non-stops, you can change once via pretty much any asian city of your choosing:
EVA: via TPE
Philippines via MNL
China Air: via TPE
Korean: via ICN
ANA: via HND
China Eastern: via PVG
Air China: via PEK
JAL: via NRT

Yes, but realistically, most of the Canada to HKG traffic are moving on AC & CX.
