UTA 772 Desert Memorial on Visible on Google Maps

Übermittelt

A friend told me to go to a certain latitude and longitude on Google Maps. When I noticed it seemed to be in the middle of an African desert, I thought he was just sending nonsense. But when I zoomed in, my mind was blown. I noticed a tiny icon that looked like an airplane. So I did some more research and discovered there’s an incredibly tragic and beautiful story behind it. Here it is, from start to finish. (www.viralnova.com) Mehr...

Well, Khadaffi-Libya paid, but I'm sure the web runs deep and like 9/11 no one source although some have claimed credit. ((9/11 was not Bin-Laden's idea !!)) Nuff said.

Maybe not the original idea, but definitely the one carrying it out and claiming credit

I was working at CDG at this time - it was a sadness to hear that a jumbojet was destroyed with all the lifes on board only for political reasons

Life doesn't seem to mean anything to those folks over there, at least some of them

I was posted to the Embassy in Ndjamena, Chad which was its final departure before the destruction. The aircraft carried many Peace Corps volunteers as well as the Ambassador's wife to Chad. She was returning a week before the Ambassador to help in setting up her daughter's wedding. The Ambassador gave a eulogy for the Peace Corps folks in the Embassy garden, foregoing his own personal grief. What a brave and honorable man and needless to say we were all speechless with tears in our eyes and a heart that will never be healed of the rift. I was unaware of the memorial...thank you for posting. The memories flood back when I saw this.

A friend put me on to the coordinates a few days ago. I can only imagine the grief that relatives and friends of the victims had. I also feel that building this memorial was a profound healing process for them.

That is pretty neat that there is a memorial for those who died in the bombing of that flight. Who would have thought to build a memorial in such a place where it could eventually be buried due to shifting and blowing sand. My thoughts go out to those who lost family on that flight.

This memorial is profoundly moving. Who designed it?

Appreciate the info on the Memorial, I was working at the US Embassy in Ndjamena at the time, and really my first experience with terrorism. I was called to the Embassy that night, and remembered seeing the Ambassador, and the news that followed was shocking. I went home the next morning. I had dinner at the Ambassador's house the night before the flght with a few people. The Ambassador's wife was on of the nicest and caring person I ever met. Her loss and the loss of a fully loaded airplane with plenty of kids returning to Paris for school, will never be forgotten.

Calling it "cool" trivializes the fact that what you are looking at is a tribute and memorial to the victims of the bombing of flight UTA 772.

I don't think it trivializes it at all. I think it's pretty "cool" that there is anything there at all. Besides the various 9/11 memorials you would be hard pressed to find other plane crash memorials as awesome as that.

You can argue about word choices, but it's still pretty amazing to see a memorial of that nature so well laid out in one of the largest deserts on the planet.

I got to agree in that you won't even see a memorial in a habitable spot of other crashes theses days. Middle of the desert is something.

Type in 16°51′53″N, 11°57′13″E in Google Maps and See What Happens

If you go to Google maps and search 16°51′53″N and 11°57′13″E something pretty cool happens: you’re taken to a place in the middle of the Sahara Desert. Zoom in and you would see a compass with the image of an airplane in the middle.
