Aviation safety has improved recently throughout the world, except Russia. Is because of money or culture?

God have mercy for travelers in Russia.

"Is because of money or culture?"

Some pilot tells about terrible problems in russian aviation. And not only old aircrafts.

Аir companies sends 2 pilots instead of 3 for long flights. It's unsafe.
3 pilots only on flights to USA, otherwise aircraft will be arrested by USA authorities.

In aircrafts with 8 emergency doors there are only 6 stewardesses. So 2 doors will be without qualified person to open and provide passengers evacuation.

And so on and so forth.

This is Russian kind of saving and revenue maximizing.

I'm trying to figure out why AP headlined the story "Boeing plane crashes in Russia, 50 believed killed" http://news.yahoo.com/boeing-plane-crashes-russia-50-believed-killed-171055373.html

Is there some reason why AP would want to direct attention and focus to the manufacturer? We don't do this with other transportation accidents, do we? I can't recall ever seeing "GMC Bus Crashes" or "Bombardier Train Derails" or anything like that, so why on this story?

AP is merely a reflector for a Russian news agency that is attempting to lay blame on an external entity. It is an ingrained desire to protect "Mother Russia."

Unfortunately, you are confusing Russian People and persons, who seized power in Russia at present. These people have in mind only the power and money. They do not stop at the deaths of hundreds and thousands of people for their own benefit.

It's pretty rare for a western plane to crash in Russia. Usually it is an old TU, YAK or IL. Even then, it was a older generation (western) aircraft. Russian media likely trying to point the finger, forgetting the guys flying the plane may have had a role...

Good info... 737-500, MFG 1990, purchase used in 2008. 18 year old a/c. I am guessing this a/c probably has over 50,000 cycles meaning it will or should have been in the aging a/c program. Looks like it was registered to Scandinavian Airlines in 1998. I am sure it did not sit at Boeing for 8 years, so I am going to assume this a/c was a 3 owner a/c. There is some conflicting info as showing 2 different model numbers. The a/c is either a 737-500 or 737-600. Either would fit the vintage, and almost impossible to tell the difference.

3? That airframe has had more owners than a Rabbit Convertible in West Hollywood. Euralair had it when it was shiny and new. Then Air France took it and tiring of stern looks from the EADS salesman sent it to Uganda Air. They must have missed a payment in 2000 when it went to Varig regional Rio Sul. They managed to do severe damage by collapsing the gear landing at Belo Horizonte. In 2005 Boeing had it for a few months (proly to replace cockpit seat covers) Then Romania's Blue Air (never known an East European to buy a new car, let alone airplane) ran it for 3 years and passed the log book to Bulgaria Air who ran with the tail number LZ-BOY which pretty much sums up the cabin service. They only kept it from May to December when Tatarstan Air became the last owner.

Looks like 8 owners.
scenic1982
Yes, 'Tatarstan airlines' is 8th owner of a/c:
"The aircraft involved was a Boeing 737-53A bearing registration number VQ-BBN, which had been in service for more than 23 years.[7] It was initially delivered to Euralair on July 13, 1990; it was then registered by Air France on June 1, 1992 before being sold to Uganda Airlines on July 15, 1995. In 2000 it was acquired by Rio Sul which kept it for five years and then sold to Blue Air which registered it on September 1, 2005. In 2008 it became part of the fleet of Bulgaria Air, but the airline kept it only a few months before selling it to Tatarstan Airlines in December of the same year"

Due to 2010.01.01 a/c had 43822 flight hours.

-500's are a lot shorter than the -600's. 735's have only one over wing hatch and the 736's have two, easiest way to tell the difference, the 735 is a "classic" 737 and the 736 is a 737NG as another way to tell.

Sorry, got -600's confused with -800's. But the -600's are 737NG's.

Same video from Russia Today... http://rt.com/news/kazan-plane-crash-video-882/
Looks like the plane came in nearly at a nearly 90 angle....
Don't like to speculate (especially since the problem had been fixed by the time the 737-500's were being manufactured) but rudder deflection?
sparkie624
sparkie624 4
I doubt it... that problem has long been fixed... Every 737 has been retrofitted. I am guessing it was probably maintenance related as the crew had problems and went around the first time. If it was rudder problems.. All crews are trained how to over come it.... Russia does not exactly have the best maintenance program in the world you know.

Exactly my point that I had made in the parenthesis. And yes, Russian maintenance + training still (to an extent) in cold war mentality.

No, 735's need the fix, it wasn't until the 737NG's came out with the fix from the factory.

Not correct.... I worked on replacing some of those actuators... The 500 was out, but the AD to replace them all came out during the 500's production run. By the time the NG's came out, the problem was well under control and fixed.

I have yet to come across a 500 that had the fix factory installed.

Appears to explode BEFORE impact. Look! Big fireball from center of A/C.
sparkie624
sparkie624 5
I have to disagree... I downloaded the video and after analyzing very carefully I have concluded the following:

1.) at 4:21 seconds the strobe flashes (A/C has not touched the ground)
2.) at 5:02 seconds the nose impacts the ground
3.) at 5:11 seconds the tail comes into view and appears to be in tact
4.) at 5:15 seconds the plane center section explodes (fuel tank assuming)

Looking at it inside of a video editor I would say that this was not an edited video. Note on the times, 4:21 is 4 seconds and 21 frames (or individual pictures) There are exactly 29.97 frames per second, so you can all that happened in roughly 1.017 seconds.

I pulled 4 images into still frames that you can view at:

About a second before impact, one of the exterior strobe lights on the plane flashes. All "big" aircraft have those. Smaller explosion on impact followed by fuel going up. Just one guys opinion, but I respectfully disagree that it explodes before impact.

2nd try. Appears to have exploded before impact. See fireball near center section? Not hard to miss.

Russian jetliner crashes; 50 dead

A Russian jetliner crashed on landing in the city of Kazan, killing all 50 aboard, authorities there reported Sunday.

Tatarstan Airlines flight 363 carried 44 passengers and a crew of six, Emergency Situations Ministry spokeswoman Irina Rossius said. There were no survivors.

The dead included Lt. Gen. Alexander Antonov, the regional chief of Russia's Federal Security Service, and Irek Minnikhanov, the son of Tatarstan regional President Rustam Minnikhanov, Russia's state news service RIA Novosti reported.

The Boeing 737 took off from Moscow's Domodedovo International Airport, about 700 kilometers (450 miles) west of Kazan, Rossius said.
