The averaging makes this story actually less of a big deal than it really is. Living in another one of the cited cities (Houston), the problem isn't the $450 fares, but rather then $1400 fares to any major market (e.g., NYC, DC, Chicago, San Francisco, etc) if you don't want to stay 3 nights or over a Friday/Saturday night.

It is so true. I was flying fairly frequently from LAX to MEM on Delta as that is the only airlines that flies non stop direct. I check costs daily and prices have jumped approx. $150.00 for same flight in the last month. Cheaper to go to Little Rock, which stops at Memphis first., Huh! I like the Memphis Airport, they have the best music, & a good shoe shine (to boot). Help.

Well, one thing pricing is based on are the Airport fees for pax that originate or depane there, which is one reason LIT is cheaper, but they are getting greedy to as FSM starts winding down.

But, as an added note, since the NWA merger and DAL is becoming dominant in there, you may see more of it as markets and Airlines consolidate and cut service.

Another great list that we Memphians are on top of lol. I drive to LIT or BNA if I have to travel.

Lax to BNA non-stop direct is cheapish. Currently LAX - MEM is $475, with a advanced reservation of 30 days to 120 days. LAX - BNA is approx. $285 - though varies.

So here is another anomaly that cannot be explained by higher airport fees. It is cheaper to fly from RSW to LAS then onto SFO (or LAX or SAN) and then back to RSW than to fly RSW to LAS return by almost $200.

If you look at the fair structure (including SWA), obviously what stays in LAS is the cost of your return flight which they take before you go there, unless you pass thru one of the big Three on the coast first.

Where oh where are you Southwest! I mean these CRJs are killing MEM up and down along with Pinnacle airlines...we need more airliners here and not more and more constant CRJs every day and night! I believe that's what's running up the fares is that those CRJs are hogging so many gates DL is lucky enough to fit there B763 in!

Well Troy, Pinnacle has a big base there, has had for years, leftover from the NWA days. DAL has kept a big part of them around for midwest coverage but has cut off a lot of those runs, particularly to the Carolinas, and now taking all that thru ATL.Pinnacle is running a lot of ATL itself as well as DAL on their own stuff, ala the 57's,67's. "A" terminal over there is all RJ, "B" is mostly the big stuff and "C" is a dukes mixture and not fully used. It is the oldest and bad need of refurbishing. They are getting to it slowly. As far as the Airport itself, FedEx is the prime mover over there. I remember in the early 80's, the FedEx parade was from about 2am til 4. That early morning is still a heavy time but there are parades in there now at various times of day. There has been a little slack up on it though since GSO got open but you really can't tell it by looking.

About 4pm - 6pm is what I call the "Regional rush"

10pm - 12am FedEx aircraft lands for the night

then 2:45am - 4am nothing but FedEx departures

And that cycle continues day and night but like you said on most nights I would say about 12 - 20 FedEx jets land and that's it.

Thankfully we have FedEx. Last night FedEx landed 152 planes at Memphis for the evening push. That # may be a bit skewed due to the holidays but FedEx keeps the airport busy at night for sure.

I came back out of ATL, later one day than I should have been on a ragged DAL 737 that subbed for a broke 57. Late enough to get caught in that afternoon parade. They were landing ok and all was nice and orderly but ATC took us way NW over of Birmingham and clear up to the Cape before turning us back South to land on one of the 18's over there. C I think but there was a solid stream on all 3.

ATC here is known to do that a points they will stretch there approach line all the way up to DYR (Dyersburg) and a long final approach for the 18s. Normally when there using the 18 runways runway 27 is not used very often as normal due to a near miss between 2 NW birds few yrs ago.
