I am sure GE will get it fixed soon. GE is a good engine manufacture.

PER A GE WEBSITE - THE GENX IS PRODUCED IN THE US WITH CURRENT PRODUCTION AT 140 ENGINES THIS YEAR, 200 NEXT YEAR AND RISING TO A CAPABILITY OF 300 PER YEAR IN A FEW YEARS. FACILITIES ARE IN MISSISSIPPI, SOUTH CAROLINA, VERMONT, OHIO AND NORTH CAROLINA. NO INFO ON SOURCE OF ALL COMPONENTS. THERE MAY BE SOMETHING FROM JAPAN, ITAL, SWEDEN, GERMANY, BELGIUM, FRANCE AND KOREA. THESE COUNTRIES HAVE REVENUE-SHARING PARTICIPANTING COMPANIES IN EACH. NOTE, I DID NOT MENTION ANTHING ABOUT CHINA.

China is not hurt too bad if they don't get any of this pie. GE sells a lot more light bulbs than they do engines.lol

Make damn good industrial gas turbines too..we got a big GE facility in Aberdeen Scotland..hell of a good company!

Do all you critics of the GEnx-2B engine know precisely where it is assembled, when all the detail parts come from? Before you throw rocks at GE, get off your high wagon of China involemenet. I am retired from Boeing and the various GE engines used in jets and helicopter over the years have been outstanding.

GE probably sub let them out to a Chinese company.

Please never generalize , substandard suppliers and manufacturers exist every where . Ask yourself , where did the principles of ' Quality Control' evolved over the centuries and why ? Both in engineering as well as in management areas ! Humor has its own time and place . Such messages can get classified as ' hate messages ' . P.S. - I am from India .

ROC is notorious for substandard products. Not a hate message just a fact.

The GE flourescent light bulbs are junk. Will burn your house down. I have ceiling fans in virtually every room and patio at home. They were made exclusively for Lowes and Home Depot. Most all have shot craps at least once in 6 years. Constantly hearing on news about young children's toys being pulled from market for dangerous defects. I'm not saying all products from ROC are that way at all. But most companies get stuff made there to cut cost; and it ain't all about labor costs.

I see your from India so to not generalize from past experiences, you have no quality control in your country.

Ian that is unfair. You cannot make statements like that unless you give an example.

Ian that comment is just silly.

That doesn't absolve this very American company from QC.

No, but I was being sarcastic about the reason they are cracking. GE does love to have its products made ROC. lol.

Good thing the Boeing 777 doesn't have the GEnx-2B engines, but it is using GE engines. But the 777 is using the GE90 engines in which part the largest engines on a commercial airliner. But then again Boeing they have 3 engine choices, P&W, GE & Rolls Royce Trent engines. Certain Dreamliners & Intercontinental/Intercontinental Freighters both use the GEnx-2B engines that's not supposed to fail like that, but nothing lasts forever. General Electric will get these engines repaired ASAP.

Actually the GE90 is the exclusive engine option on the 777-200LR and 777-300ER. But like Rolls Royce, GE has been making engines forever and nothing is perfect, so this will be resolved shortly.

I tried to search the WEB to find out where the engine is manufactured. What I found is there is not one place that manufactures all the parts. Many of the parts are manufactured in the USA all though some do come from China. Just which parts they may be I could not find out.

The engine itself as an end unit I believe is built up and delivered from a factory in the USA. Based on the stories I've read so far and the the bulletin put out by GE I have my doubts the failure is going to found to be a failure of the metal forging itself. Rather it appears to look like the coating used by GE is failing to protect against corrosion from salt water. Since these planes are doing a great deal of flying over salt water this may end up being the true cause.

Tool guy, whilst I respect your answer,I note in your final sentence that a great deal of flying is is over salt water. Not wishing to be disrespectful, but it says in the article, that a fault was also found in an engine that had not flown.

"In the event of an extended twin-engine flight over water, for example, the aircraft would have to operate on only a single engine for up to 5.5h, the NTSB letter says."

Lubes and Fuel chemical compostions. Bio products are so common now. Traces of water all it needs to cause oxidation. Interesting problem worthy of deep investigation.

Emergency AD to be issued for 787 and 747-8 GEn-x Engines

The FAA will issue an Emergency Airworthinesss Directive for all GEn-x powered 787's and 747-8's after two shaft fractures.

funny nobody seems to care about this: the 787 was given enormous ETOP's right from the beginning, although it was a complete new plane, new engine, new systems, new materials. Because the FAA thought it was safe. Well, now it turns out that several engines failed even before the planes were delivered to their new and first owner...The NTSB thought it was highly possible and even likely that both engines could fail on the same flight, even with extremely low hours on them... very safe thought for a intercontinental flight ! So here is what happens something what seems typical for US society: when profits and business is put before safety. According to Republicans and mr. Romney such safety rules are only bad for business...

Not just for U.S. society. Happens in all societies. The real power agents are the insurance companies and the courts of law.

What an ignorant statement. Who makes these engines...... GE... what is one of the DNC,s biggest contributer....GE.... Your attempt at trying to link politics to this issue is assinine. This is a technical issue that will be solved by GE. These are newly designed engines and have for the most part performed as expected. There are teathing issues with new designs that sometimes will arrise with this level of engineering. It has nothing to do with politics.
Derg

Well it does show the politicians that you cannot model the future by math on a computer. Nature always surprises us. She always has the upper hand. So in a way it is political because it reveals how weak we are, shows the power hikers that we cannot control the physical world.

The GE Engines were not available for the first 787's. Those planes were released with the Rolls-Royce Trent Engines and received the high ESOP rating. GE will find the fix for the problem before anymore engines are released and operators will monitor all GE engines for a while to make sure this problem is a none issue.

Unfortunately some things have to operate under operational conditions before flaws are found. Both Boeing and Airbus are well aware of this as is their respective certification agencies. This is the reason for such stringent testing programs. Still some problems do not manifest themselves until well after the testing and certification process.

Some past problems have been the result of operator maintenance programs. These cannot be accounted for in the testing programs of the manufacturer. One of the worst of these was a DC10 by American Airlines having an engine separation during takeoff from ORD.

Lets wait until GE finds out what the actual cause of the problem is before you condemn an entire product production.

NTSB Urges Action After Engine Failures in New Boeing 787, 747 Airliners

The National Transportation Safety Board is recommending inspections for all new Boeing 787 and 747-8 aircraft with General Electric engines. The NTSB made the recommendation to the Federal Aviation Administration after two of GE’s newest engines experienced failures in the past few months. Three separate incidents all point to a similar cause for the failures in the engines.
