Pilot’s DSLR Jammed Airliner Joystick and Caused it to Plummet, Investigation Finds

Übermittelt

Dozens of military personnel were injured when an RAF transport plane on its way to Afghanistan nose-dived 4,400ft after the captain's camera became lodged alongside the aircraft's joystick. In 27 seconds of chaos, the plane lost 4,400ft in altitude, throwing passengers and crew without seatbelts towards the ceiling, injuring 33 of those on board. (www.dailymail.co.uk) Mehr...

Is the side-stick functional when autopilot is selected?
WigzellRM

I ask the same question.

A given amount of pressure should override the autopilot on any aircraft. But the Airbus has turned much of their flying over to the computer to the point the computer can override pilot inputs. Throw in bad CRM and it's really messed up as was determined with AF447.

I'm really not fond of their design.

After more than a century of aviation, it is known by pretty much every living person that aircraft can abruptly go up, down, sideways, etc., and some of those persons continue to refuse to keep seatbelts fastened. Every time an aircraft hits wind sheer and someone is injured, it is always either a passenger without their seatbelt fastened or a passenger smashed by the flying body of the person without the seatbelt fastened. I don't like people being hurt, but you can't fix stupid.

Something that usually happens in those Airplane movies.

This is why REAL passenger planes have flight yokes.

This is also why you fly the plane and don't worry about taking pictures.

I've always wondered how many car accidents are caused by people dropping cell phones in mid-conversation and then fumbling to find them instead of paying attention to their 3000-pound, 70-mph death machine.

Not wishing to lessen the seriousness of the issue but maybe a smaller camera and a neckstrap, some high end compacts can produce impressive results and there are plenty of videos and stills on Youtube from various action cameras.

The pilot is a klutz. How the heck can the "seat move forward" by itself...Why would any driver place an object anywhere near the side stick.....I think this pilot should be kept away from sharp objects and breakables. Reminds me of this "an accident waiting for a place to happen"....

Ergonomically a yoke invites two hands, whereas a stick suggests one hand, leaving the other free to operate brakes, throttles, mike, etc. (I mean a real stick, not a toy from a video game.) Contrastingly, a solid rudder bar is very useful as when in shock (knees shaking uncontrollably etc) you can push forward with equal pressure on both heels and relax slightly for the foot on the side you are turning to. You can also use your free hand to stabilize the hand on the stick by grabbing the area around the wrist with the free hand and pulling outwardly with equal pressure on both arms. Of course you also need to fixate on keeping the ball centered and the nose below the horizon to avoid repeating the scary bit which turned your knees to jelly.(My personal experience)

Where I agree with your Ergonomics, that is a VERY long stretch between the Yolk and the Throttles... A Dangerous move and still see out of the cockpit... As far as a real stick vs a computer JoySticks, I think some of the Gaming Joysticks have a better feel. I will continue to support the Yolk vs the Joy Stick.

Hi Sparkie
I was extending the discussion too far. I never flew Commercial, only GA and sailplanes, usually single pilot, and preferred the feel of an actual stick to a yoke. I meant an actual stick (even one from the panel) rather than a sidestick which might be difficult for the FO to see. I also agree that both pilots should definitely be able to feel each other's input on the controls.

No problem... Between the Joy Stick and the Stick, the terms get close together....

Funny comment to be sure. However, whether it be "foul vs. fowl" or "yoke vs. yolk" can we just rise above being elementary school teachers and stick to the point? Spelling seems to have become a major issue on this site which is simply ridiculous. If what the individual is saying s clear and understandable, then job well done.

Sorry, but I AM an elementary school teacher!

And my pupils know the difference between "foul" language and a good "english" breakfast!

Except, you see, that isn't what this site is about. Sometimes even teachers need to remember they aren't always correcting papers.

OK, so lets see.

Aircraft runway and aircraft runaway the same thing huh?

One of the major causes of incidents is miscommunication. It starts with using language improperly.

One of the best things flying taught me was how to ensure this does not happen.

....The instructions used the word "takeoff," but did not include an explicit statement that they were cleared for takeoff.

Meurs read the flight clearance back to the controller, completing the readback with the statement: "We are now at takeoff."[2] Captain Veldhuyzen van Zanten interrupted the co-pilot's read-back with the comment, "We're going."[2]

The controller, who could not see the runway due to the fog, initially responded with "OK" (terminology which is nonstandard), which reinforced the KLM captain's misinterpretation that they had takeoff clearance. The controller's response of "OK" to the co-pilot's nonstandard statement that they were "now at takeoff" was likely due to his misinterpretation that they were in takeoff position and ready to begin the roll when takeoff clearance was received, but not in the process of taking off. The controller then immediately added "stand by for takeoff, I will call you,"[2] indicating that he had not intended the clearance to be interpreted as a takeoff clearance....

Dear AWAAlum,

Just to be even more pedantic, "over and out should never be used on R/T.

"Over" means you have finished transmitting and are standing by or waiting for a response.

"Out" means you are closing down the radio station.

So putting both in the same line does not make sense, and leaves doubt lingering in the air!

Use one or the other, but NEVER both at the same time!

My elementary school teachers know that English is capitalized.
africantilapia
Adrian Piers 0
Yes, when used referring to the Queens English. Bacon, eggs and toast does not deserve such haughty treatment and is just called english breakfast.

And when you are eating one at the controls, mind you don't get any yolk on the yoke, or anywhere else for that matter. It's no fun seeing the Captain with egg on his face!
Moviela
Ric Wernicke 0
Consulting the OED I discover that the English in English Breakfast refers to the people of the England, and is thus capitalized. Quoting the first known use:

1773 P. Brydone Tour Sicily & Malta I. i. 12 After bathing, we have an English breakfast at his lordship's.

I suggest your school get the twenty volume set. The rich history of words and changes in uses over the past thousand years is full of enlightenment.

My school here in Africa is under a tree, as there is no money for classrooms or desks. We also have difficulty affording blackboards and chalk.

So I think a purchase of the twenty volume set would not be entertained by the administrators.

But thank you for the information.

Yeah.. But when you pull one back, the other one follows... Not like that in a gaming plane... Other crew member has no clue what inputs you are applying.

btweston

I think it had to do with the camera being jammed into the stick. If you push any stick (or yoke) the wrong way and hold it there bad things will happen. Maybe don't bring your toys when you're supposed to be flying a plane.

What's a gaming plane, by the way?
