Air Canada to launch its own loyalty program
Air Canada (AC, Montréal Trudeau) has announced that it will cancel its commercial agreement with Aimia, which operates the airline's frequent flyer program Aeroplan, effective June 30, 2020. The article did not specify one important detail: who owns the name Aeroplan which has been around for over 30 years and undoubtedly has huge marketing value.
Aeroplan was created by Air Canada and spun off some time ago to raise cash when they were on hard times. I am pretty sure Aimia owns Aeroplan and AC is "simply" not renewing their contract. No doubt they will come to a new agreement as Aeroplan will likely make new deals with other airlines like Air Miles does. Not sure how it will all shake out, but I expect Air Canada to build on their "Altitude" brand that they have been using for the past few years for their frequent flyer system (which was confusing).
Let's hope the new program will be easier to contact in case of differences concerning miles not credited. Aimia has no telephone number on their Aeroplan website, and in case of miles with other Star Alliance partners that are not accepted I would like to know why.
