Bring back LORAN-C or similar as a backup to GPS. I believe LORAN was quite impervious to jamming, and only required a few transmitters to serve an entire region. It won't replace WAAS-GPS approaches, but should be good enough for enroute.

Wasn't there something done after Jessica Dubroff's misadventure making attempts to set fligh records without an actual pilot certificate illegal? I remember this idea was put forth by AOPA after there were many (idiotic) calls to not allow teens to take the controls at all after that crash.

I used to be a Frontier frequent flyer with "status", pretty impressive flying out of New York. When the airline was acquired by Republic, everything went downhill. When Republic spun it off, things got even worse. Over the past three years I have witnessed an extreme de-evolution: - Removal of free soft drinks - Loss of extended legroom (Unless you pay extra for it) - Removal of advanced seat assignment (unless you pay extra for it) - Loss of free moving map - Loss of Wild Blue Yonder Magazine - Loss of (free) Wild Blue Yonder TV - Loss of MSNBC TV - Raised price for TV, twice! - Frequent flights where TVs to not work - either for the entire plane or for many seats - Loss of free TV for Ascent and Summit - Discounted credit of economy-ticket miles toward Elite Status - Loss of free breakfast or snack - Loss of hot food completely - Loss of Udi snacks - Reduced or eliminated service from New York City - Loss of free checked baggage - Loss of fr

If you fly "to Kerrville" or anywhere else every week, you should get an instrument rating. VFR is great for pleasure flying, but not sufficient to keep a schedule.

This thread reminds me of a joke: On board a jet flying to Europe, two passengers hear the announcement: "Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your Captain speaking. We have had some minor trouble with the #1 engine and had to shut it down. This will make us about 40 minutes late landing at Heathrow" A while later, the Pilot comes on the PA again: "I am afraid we have lost our #3 engine, and our arrival will now be about 90 minutes late. We are very sorry for the inconvenience" Another hour goes by, and the plane gets even quieter. The Pilot announces: "We are really very sorry, but now we have lost the #2 engine. We regret to inform our very patient passengers that we will be over 2 hours late landing at Heathrow". One passenger turns to the other and says: "I sure hope we don't lose #4, we'll be up here all day!"

I think you are completely wrong about the destruction being "legal". It is a federal offense to vandalize any airport, regardless of who "owns" it! The only way he could legally destroy the airport would be to officially and publicly close it FIRST. When the bulldozers rolled, the airport was open and ATC was IN THE TOWER! Daly also illegally diverted funds from O'Hare to fund the destruction. The fact that no one seems to be proposing that the airport be restored (for far less cost than the proposed concert venue) saddens me.

From the article: "Ask Chicagoans, would they rather have the Meigs airport for a few people or to go see Jimmy Buffett?" said Green, director of the Institute for Politics at Roosevelt University. I doubt well-known pilot Jimmy Buffett would want to perform under these circumstances.
