From the original news report

http://www.mtexpress.com/news/transportation/willis-airport-neighbors-win-lawsuit-against-camas-county/article_b3f37b1e-4199-11e7-9bac-33f42ca6f730.html

this appears to be a local land use case.

Neighbors of Mr. Willis objected to the use as interfering with agriculture of the area and property values. Someone pointed out to the Co Supervisors that an airport violated the zoning ordinance covering agricultural land and that if it wasn't written in the ordinance, it was prohibited by law.

Sups changed the zoning ordinance on the fly to include airports. Neighbors feeling like the Sups failed to follow the law field suit.

The article is about the judge agreeing with them.

Another article in the paper reports the judge just announced he is retiring.

Supervisors disregarding the law do do what their contributors want is a lucrative niche market for some attorneys.

I can't think of too many uses for a dirt runway like that -- a Pilatus PC-24 is about the only one.

Too bad you know so little about AC as there are many which can use it. Not just that one by the way look them up, C206,207.180,185 cessnas for a start.

You are right on that. In Africa dirt strips are the most common and used by a wide variety of aircraft up to the size of the Dash 7. Lots of Grand Caravans, Twin Otters and even LET L-410s.

None of the aircraft you mentioned NEED such a long runway -- not even the PC-24 does.

You can bet Mr. willis isn't going to all that trouble and expense to base a single-engine prop there. Think of something with more space, speed and prestige that can utilize a dirt runway.

Thanks for playing.

Bush planes don't need length

What about all those farmers with grass/dirt or paved strips on their own property?

Would that make it the worlds longest dirt runway? That is a long one! Maybe for Travolta's 707.....
