The Skyvan is a product of the F-4 Phantom school of aeronautical design:

Judging by the tiny wings, I'd guess they are getting some notable lift from the box as well.
Regional airports in NC saw this bird for passenger flights with Piedmont and then US Air. I flew on many of them.
It was an enjoyable experience flying in these regularly over to Vancouver Island in the 80s and 90s
