Dad said these were his favorite sight out in the Pacific. He was an AO in TBMs, CVE Lunga Pointe.
My father was a pilot and served mostly as flight engineer during WWII in the South Pacific campaign. They would come back full of holes, and be ready to head back out the next night. VP-11, flying flat black PBY-5's. They would strap on wheels to the wing spars to drag them out of the water.

My dad flew these as PIC out of SAN with VP98 during the last year of WW II.
This is a "Cat"alina. Awesome airplanes that rescued many downed pilots. Also rescued many of the survivors of the Indianapolis.

I can imagine that lots of WWII pilots who were shot down in the Pacific remember this aircraft land and pluck them out of the water!
