Sorry what is this aircraft? I know it isnt a Mustang or a Spitfire. I like to view the photos posted each week, however I do so wish every posting person should have to give some info on the subject [ this one for instance ] at least what the aircraft is! I spent 50 years in the front line of the Aviation Industry and there is no way I know every aircraft that ever flew!

Curtiss P-40 Warhawk

P 40, one of the USA legend on Pasific scene during WWII

The P-40 Warhawks were flown in China early in 1942 by the famed Flying Tigers and in North Africa in 1943 by the 99th Fighter Squadron, the first African American U.S. fighter unit.

Fifty years in aviation and the P40 is unrecognizable to you? Austrailia used them in WW2

No offense, Phil, but 50 years in the front line and you don't recognize a P40? Really? WOW! (Nuff said.)

The volunteers who were the early pilots in the "Flying Tigers" Were initially not "official" U.S. Govt. aviators.

That recognition came later, often too late for many of us to recognize the courage of those who gave their lives for freedom in another part of the world.

How can one spend 50 years in the front line of the Aviation Industry and not recognize a P-40 Warhawk. One of the most iconic fighter aircraft during WWII.

Timothy, this is one of the finest photographs I have seen on FlightAware in a very long time. You have done a wonderful job of capturing the speed and motion of the subject in a static image. Two things particularly set it apart: your shutter speed is slow enough the blur the prop blades, and your panning technique to blur the otherwise distracting background. You have separated the subject from its surroundings, which is usually key to successfully photographing the world around us. (Note to others ... shoot at slower shutter speeds on prop- and rotor-driven aircraft. Frozen blades on flying aircraft just don't work.)

Yes, The First American Volunteer Group of the Republic of China Air Force, nicknamed the Flying Tigers, was formed to help oppose the Japanese invasion of China. Operating in 1941–1942, it was composed of pilots from the United States Army Air Corps, Navy, and Marine Corps, and was commanded by Claire Lee Chennault.
