I'll always believe that AA's R, W, and B on bare metal livery was a superb scheme, but I'll also always feel that this one was the #1 AA livery. That lightning bolt cheat harkens way back to the mid 20th century but three-quarters of a century later it still "works." It took me a loooong time to get used to the current AA livery and I'm OK with it now but both the R, W, and B scheme and this one were much better. Just sayin' ..... (lol)

Nice pic, and I'm with you, Gary! I like this one, too.

Fantastic shot of this classic retro Gary! Crystal clear sharp and beautiful background! This one should be framed! All 5 and deserves many many more!

Great shot. That logo on the tail was only in use from 1962-1967. Brings back memories. As a child I watched the first 707 landing at Dallas' Love Field on July 12, 1959. Forty-five years later I retired as a captain for AA.

What a wonderful surprise. That is so beautiful. Seeing it took me back to the 60's at MDW where I spent a lot of my time learning to fly. It would be great to see more of this classic livery at every sirort.

Can't get used to the new AA livery, nothing identified the line better than the AA on the tail with the silver body. I really like seeing the pre '70s lightening bolt. There were four great liveries from growing up in the 60s that made me a plane watcher: Pan Am, TWA, AA, and the National Sun King - my personal favorite. Thanks for sharing this great photo of American!

A trip back in time. I first saw that livery on American's Convair 990's! Love the lightning bolt.

Beautiful livery...

If I were ever to become president of AAL, my first directive would be to resurrect the 1950s livery on every single airplane the line possesses.

Thanks for sharing this beauty with us Gary, and for ALL the great photos and details you have given us

Definitely what an airliner paint job should look like. Besides it saves a ton of weight from less paint applied.

@Gary Schenauer, are you on Instagram? Trying to find you there as well.

@ Jeff Slack >>> No. I am not involved in any of the social media groups. The only "public' media outlet I still participate in is this one, and as of a few months ago as this site's legitimacy has continued to degrade I have followed the lead of other photogs who used to post here but are now gone and I have heavily reduced my involvement here. I appreciate your interest and I certainly wish you good health and good fortune. I'll make you this offer: If there is any photo of mine (or of any particular aircraft type) that you wish to have, just let me know at [email protected] (gcs)
