AWESOME shot!!
My father flew those out of Guam as a "Typhoon Chaser" in the late 50s. I imagine descending into the eye was quite a view also.

Neil,
I was a civilian contractor on Guam in the late 50s attached to the Typhoon Chasers.
The aircraft were all B50s not B17s.
Possibly after all these years the numbers got mixed up.

Best seats in the house!!
Conrad Kass
Neil,
Sorry for the mixup on aircraft.
They started with 29s and then went to 50s.
Never 17s.
My age is showing.

Several years ago I flew from Amarillo to Midland in the bombadier seat of this plane. My husband was the Flight Engineer back then. Fifi's home was in Midland at the CAF's Main Hangar at the Midland/Odessa airport. I was an amazing flight!

My dad flew B-29s as an instructor stateside for the Army Air Corps. After flying B-17s and 24s the Superfortress became his favorite. In the ‘80s while on a trip to Harlingen, TX dad discovered the Confederate Air Force, so he decided we needed a squadron in Tulsa, so he started the Spirit of Tulsa Squadron with some guys. In 1988 when FiFi was here in Tulsa to get new avionics installed by Spartan I went to watch her fire ‘em up and take off to Houston Hobby for her next air show. The pilot informed me that they had one seat open on the manifest and asked me if I’d like to take it, which of course I did. My seat was the bombardier’s seat right in the nose of that beautiful dome. That day was my most memorable ever in aviation because as a kid I never dreamed I’d get to see, much less fly in dad’s favorite plane!
