Peter, thanks for taking the time to upload this old photo, absolutely incredible! Just trying to imagine what that sounded like?! I assume the ramp guy is just trying to prevent his hat from blowing away but its nice to imagine he's giving a salute as the aircraft pulls away… Great stuff!
I suspect that bird couldn't fly in the EU today except on exhibition because of noise!
Paul,the Britannia was so quiet it was called "The Whispering Giant" and would still be allowed to fly into any airport!
Along with the Vickers Viscount, the Britannia was a fine example of Britain's post-war airliner design. I have seen several, and they were no noisier than the ubiquitous C133, and nowhere near as loud as the first-gen jets (eg 707, 727).

Beautfull
I flew the Canadair CL44 which was based on the Britania only longer. 5,400 SHP per engine. 300 Knots Cruise. Great plane. On the ramp it was as loud as any direct drive turbo prop but on takeoff it was very quite. It was also very efficient.
