This is what regret looks like for the Pentagon

America's most expensive weapons system ever just hit another snag. The F-35 Lighting II, Lockheed Martin's fifth-generation fighter jet, is expected to miss a crucial deadline for successfully deploying its sixth and final software release — referred to as Block 3F. (www.yahoo.com) Mehr...

All this high technology to fight a bunch of Arabs on Toyotas with hand held missile launchers. And they keep threatening to get rid of the A10.

Ike said it in the 50's, but no one ever wants to listen.

The F-35 is the replacement for the Navy's F-18 Hornet, the Air Force's F-16 Falcon, and the Marine's AV-8B Harrier - it was not designed as a replacement for the Air Force's F-15 Eagle. The F-35 is not an air superiority fighter with poor rearward visibility, less than stellar maneuverability, and poor thrust to weight ration. The F-22 Raptor was the replacement for the F-15, but the Pentagon screwed up that opportunity badly and the US is now left with too few replacements for the F-15. Of course someone may believe the F-35 is going to replace the F-15, maybe the F-15E as a ground attack bomb truck, but it cannot fight its way back out of a hot zone the same way an unladen F-15 is capable of. Someday the F-35 will earn its respect, but not in the air superiority role.

Its been a bad thing from the start. Too high tech and will never be fixed from what I have read. Need to just give up and pull the plug on it. Think of it as it starting out as a piper cub for two people to fly at 70mph and morphing into an airliner still fabric covered.

agree... AF has screwed up the F22 and now the F35... taking so long that our enemies are ready for it...can't wait to see how they screw up the new bomber

I see the problem with this program as one of too many chef's in the kitchen. In previous aviation programs for the military the design and test staff could meet in a classroom, now they would need Dodger Stadium.

Lockheed needs to downsize back to levels last seen in Burbank, tune up the Skunk Works to keep the enemy from learning how things work, and assure that everything from the molecular up is sourced in America, and Americans build in America.

Punks that oppose peace and tranquility should run like the roaches they are when they see the red, white, and blue coming at them.

Reading the DoD report really spells it out. They have run out of fingers for the holes in the dike and there are more coming than the toes can take care of. We could not burn money any faster than it is being poured down the hole of the F-35 program. At its best it will have more operational limitations than any pilot could hope to remember and not be the master of any single combat role. When one does take the missile suppository, if the pilot survives, they probably will not survive the ejection. Flush it, learn the lessons, make the acquisition changes, and move on.

Excellent points indicated by the previous posters! Let's not give Lockheed a pass here, both F-22 and F-35 are Lockheed programs.

But keep in mind the F-22 Raptor has lived up to its performance promises and can kick the tailpipe of anything that dares to fly against it - just ask any of the pilots of opposing aircraft at any of the inter-nation military competitions. The F-35 on the other hand cannot outfly the aircraft (at least the Air Force) it is designed to replace - the F-16 is reported to be able to fly circles around it in a dogfight. The F-22 is a success story, in spite of the costs, whereas the F-35 does not appear to be living up to expectations both in the air and in the pocketbook.

it is the best one out there but....costs a fortune to fly and maintain... one of the reasons they only built 187

First shot, first kill (and second kill with possibly a third) before the opposition knows where you are at comes with a price. I believe the F-22 stealth technology is worth every penny and may make many enemies think twice before committing their aircraft to a fight knowing Raptors are in the air.

Still working on that first shot there, pal.

I agree! Let me caveat my comments with...I am a strong advocate of the F-22!

The F35 currently has it's issues, but the F-16 cannot "fly circles" around the F-35. I think it's important to realize the context that the TEST dogfight took place in. As a result of failing to report the context, the report was highly misconstrued. The "dogfight" was with a pre-production model F-35, and the context was a test flight designed to look at a highly programmable flight model and search for tweaks.
