With that much water, it's going to take awhile to make sure the tower is operational and the runways aren't compromised. Hopefully the US will offer assistance with helicopters and ships, unless our own states get hammered.

If there were oil in Puerto Rico, we would have been there in a heartbeat.

There is a lot of essential equipment that will need to be replaced before the airport can reopen, like security screening and baggage handling equipment. None of that likes being submerged in salt water.

Well said. The news said the whole island/islands is/are technically underwater and storm surges over 20 feet coming at them. They will pretty much have to rebuild them.

Yes they more than likely will get help from the US. It is total devastation there, more than 13,000 houses badly damaged.

I doubt our government will be that quick to lend assistance... after all, they are British, and we are feuding with them at the moment over trade issues ... Iran, the Middle East as a whole, and the Bahamians are ..... putting it most delicately "not white". A President who had any empathy would have ordered our hospital ships to the area and had assistance on standby to hit the ground running as soon as Dorian moves out. Hear anything about that? I didn't think so.

It doesn't make sense to send a hospital ship into a Category 5 hurricane. Even if the ship was already there, it wouldn't be able to do anything useful because it would be extremely hazardous to try to embark or disembark. US naval vessels usually go out to sea and try to evade or ride out major storms on the edges.

The US Coast Guard does already have four helicopters in the Bahamas conducting rescue operations while Dorian is still stalled there -- who here would like to volunteer for that duty?

I surely wudn't like that job

The advantage the Bahama's has over Puerto Rico is it's a former British Colony. God Bless the Brits, they take care of their own. I'm guessing they already have supplies and manpower on the way.

it will take a long, long time for that airport to reopen to traffic..it maybe botsa and/or helicopeters only from the mainland for a while after the storm has completely passed or dissipated...
