ATC tape and radar of King Air with dead pilot and SEL pilot

Übermittelt

This is a terrific tape of ATC bringing down a KingAir with an inexperienced single engine VFR pilot who had to fly a King Air after his pilot died. Long tape but what a terrific job done by all. This happened on April 15, 2009 in Florida, as many remember. (www.liveleak.com) Mehr...

I hope he got to log that time.

Interesting one Nugget. I mean if he wasn't PIC, who was?

Outstand! Well worth the listen.

I think all will agree that Doug White did a fantastic job and remained calm through out. What may not be known is that in addition to the deceased pilot and Doug, Doug’s wife and two children were onboard. He was on a return flight home after attending his younger brothers funeral. Doug acknowledges that he also has a Co Pilot with him in the cockpit. I am proud to call Doug a friend.

Agreed, stayed wonderfully calm. And the King Air is hardly a good intro plane to flying an MEL. Kudos to Mr. White.

Outstanding job..! No, he can not log the time. He must be rated and in this case "typed", before logging time as PIC. However, he has more than proven that he would be a short time student. I only wish, I could claim him as one of my primary students.
As a closing thought, there is a lot to be said for good old fashion "stick flying". With all the electronic "Aids" we now have on board, the art of stick flying has almost become a forgotten talent. Especially in the larger aircrart.

Only the 350 King Air needs a type. And I think the logging was a joke. But if he wasn't PIC, who was? Logging comes to Acting PIC and LOGGING PIC. They are quite different.

All you have to do is listen to Doug's response to Fort Meyers Approach. "Me and the good Lord is flying this plane". His basic training was key here as well.

Rick, your correct "stick flying" is a lost art! I thought I had arrived when I first flew and airplane with dual VOR's.

Shawn, I agree with you. He could claim this time as Acting PIC. But for future ratings, the time must be legal PIC. That means, MEL and TYPE.
As far as TYPE in KA-200, you may be right? However as I came through the ranks, it was required. I was sent to Flight Safety in Vero Beach for KA-200 and GS-4. The KA-200 "MAY" have been by employer requirements. They paid for both type rating at the time. My ego does not require me to always be right and I'm to lazy to look it up right now. LOL
At any rate, he is a fantastic pilot and I'm sure he will benefit from this flight. With or with out the logging.

Rich,
Oh yes, I remember that time well. Then came Loran...MAGIC. The first time I heard of a flight director, I thought it was a new guy in ATC. LMAO

I can't believe we are debating whether or not he can log the flight time!!!!!!!!!

I don't think it was very smart to give him a frequency change... he had enough to worry about. They cleared the frequency anyway.

I have flown a lot of heavy iron and it took a lot of training to do it. I congratulate this SEL pilot who had no time in that aircraft and had to use all of his knowledge to safely get that 200 on the ground. Great job!
EmeraldRocket
RIck, most go to training on the BE-200. But it is not a type as it is under 12,500 lbs. The 350 is over and requires type. Agreed, some awesome flying.

When I clicked on view comments, I should've known this would've turned into a debate about if he could log the time or not. Regardless, I would've logged it, and I guarantee nobody's would dispute it in this guy's logbook.
EmeraldRocket
I ever take over in an emergency of some type not rated in I will ask "for the option" just to make em nervous. AND log it.

I can't decide if this is humorous or an outrage.. the pilot DIED.. he ceased to live he is D E A D DEAD. His poor wife is a widow now and his kids have a funeral to plan.

OH BOY the pilot died now I'm alone at the controls of a King Air! Gotta take full advantage of this and log this flight time!

While we are at it let's get in some stalls and steep turns. Then we can end the day with an instrument approach.

How do you think the dead pilot's family would feel??
