I'm surprised it took this long for the industry to take this more seriously. A few months ago at work I had to intervene on shipments for just ORM-D material. Most of it was domestic ground but some was going express international. We very rarely handle HAZMAT, but I keep certified. My boss didn't see the big deal behind it until I told him the fines we would get for improper shipping, lol.

NBAA has been on this for a while, with no loose LION batteries in non accessible baggage areas and other considerations such as phone battery ignition in the cabin in flight. As LT said, this is not a new issue, and has been well demonstrated by Tesla, B787, et.al. real world examples by the score.

LION batteries are considered HAZMAT in the transportation industry!

I have personally observed black plastic-wrapped pallets of LION electronics sitting in the Summer hot sun for hours in both DXB and SEL awaiting shipment/loading on cargo aircraft.
