I guess my buddies interview with American Eagle was pointless... Lol

I really don't think anybody down there expected this, then, just in the last couple of days, the rumor mill started churning. Those that are left are along for the ride. High enough in seniority to stay, but too young to retire, which Lump Sum is gone and long term ain't gonna be near what they are looking at anyway. I did a turn to ATL the weekend before they announced. I was told yesterday that future fill in would be slim to none with what they were having to go through now.
preacher1
preacher1 0
Just got some more fodder out of the rumor mill at DFW; I hope it's wrong but the word is now that Eagle will be gutted and remain in name only, to be totally operated by a contract, probably Mesa. Any remaining Aircraft will be picked up by that carrier and needed emmployess will be from existing staff and dovetailed into seniority roster of contracting carrier, no longer being employees of AA and pension rights gone. I guess we'll see.

well the ATRs are gone. The EMBs will follow soon, that will really put a damper on AMR's employees.

I see you got in while I was Wayne, and it sounds the same from both parts of the country. Hope that didn't confuse you RRKen?

Not in the least, and I thank you both for the timely response. Same kind of predicament at San Angelo, TX, AF town, and the possibility of no commercial air service (American Eagle) would not bode well with students comeing and going. Never did check to see if they had EAS.
preacher1
preacher1 0
Ken: for what it's worth, I don't think you will see a major service curtailment, as that has already been done throughout the year. As I said, I think you'll just see it operated by a contractor susch as Mesa or somebody. I just keep tossing that name out as their name is at the top of the rumor mill coming out of DFW.

RRKen, It's very confusing to alot of us little guys! The answers come from the top, but #1. $$,#2, sise of arpt,ie;population, runway length,etc.,#3, NOT letting the "other guy" get in or more flts. Thats just a few factors! Out here in Ca., Skywest flies an EMB120 IPL-LAX/LAX-IPL and no other commercial flts., just cargo. See IPL is next to El Centro Navy base and our heros can get a better connecting flt, out of LAX than SAN (which is closer). Most of the other Skywest flts. use the RJ's. That's just one example. Wayne, see if you can help out here,or anybody?
preacher1
preacher1 0
Can't help much because as you say, it comes from the top and they are seeing the numbers. Most Airports these days that can support commercial service have a long enough runway to handle an RJ. If they don't, they generally don't have enough pax to support it anyway. As far as our heroes at the Navy Base, if they don't support the Airport, Skywesst can't fly for nothing. As subsidies for small towns are being cut and fuel up $1+ over the last year, even the ATR's or the SAAB's can't fly for nothing.
crabmann2
Jim Arnett 0
Well...They said "business as usual"...wonder if they'll keep the $30mil penthouse in London. Good place to put up over-nighters on lay-overs...This is a typical airline pre-planned bankrupcy that must occur every 8-9 years...keep 'em comin'
RRKen
Kenneth Schmidt 0
Help me out here. The ATR's served smallish terminals, ones that did not rate an RJ or EMB. Has it become that uneconomical to serve them, despite the consumer traveliing on to another destination from the hub?

I guess the same could be asked of the RJ's. They server small to medium locals, and feed into hubs. So why would they want to rid themselves of them, unless those kind of passengers are no longer worthy of air service.
preacher1
preacher1 0
Ken:you kinda answered your own question. Be it ATR or a small RJ, I don't think you'll see service dropped unless it is uneconomical. You still have the same crew cost (3 people)and while the ATR's may be a little cheaper operating they are so dang slow it ain't funny. For instance, KDFW to KFSM. a tad less than an hour on an RJ, 1 1/2 hrs on an ATR. Eagle has been flying 1 per day in there for whatever reason. They have alredy cut a couple of daily flights just from an ecomonic standpoint. They'll replace that ATR with an RJ. Over the course of a crew day, that 1/2 hr can add up to about 4 hrs that does nothing but cost the Airline. It's not about whether the pax will go thru a hub or not but if there is not enough revenue to justify the service cost, they will drop it completly. Regardless of the plane type or where they are going on to, they cannot be ran at a loss.

In regard to AA and the RJ's, the ones going away, are old and need shedding. I expect to see service maintained, but probably contract from Mesa or somebody rather than AA owning the equipment. They were the last I think, to have owned their feeder fleet
preacher1
preacher1 0
Ken: I meant 1 ATR out of their group. They have numerous daily flights but that ATR is generally on one mid morning. They compete daily withDAL(NWA) which has 4 per day to MEM. I think one of theirs is a SAAB. That may have changed as I heard they were getting rid of them too.

Booooo....no more ATR's climbing to 1,200 then turning East/West and burning over our North Texas homes in Coppell and Euless @ 1,500 ft and 150kts........

I guess they look good from the ground, but I personally feel it's like trying to fly a boxcar and flying on one as a pax is a less than desirable experience.

I just saw on AA.com that instead AA will send 767-300ERs to Coppell and Euless TX for example, pilots are instructed to take off at full power due to density altitude and shorter runways. They will start to connect cities served by regionals to DFW then on to europe with bigger planes. Having a 767 flying over at 1000ft with full power burning 10 times the jet fuel will be much more enjoyable.

Hey Toby

I'm pretty sure the airport existed well before you moved into your double wide there at Shade n' Low trailer park.

If you don't like boat noise, don't live near the water.
If you don't like train noise, don't live near the tracks.
And if you don't like Airplane noise (and who in their right mind doesn't?) then
DON'T LIVE NEAR AN AIRPORT!

airborneryder 0
Why is he even on this site if he doesn't like jet noise? He is complaining about planes on an aviation site! I would give anything to have a B747 or A380 fly 500ft over my head!! I've have saw many a/c but not that one. I live near DC and I hear a/c all day long I don't know about you but that's surely music to my ears.

I live right under the short final approach to runway 27 of MEM. Planes go over at 800 - 1,000 ft.! And we're talking like MD11s, DC10s, B777s, B757s. All that good stuff.

I can remember in the early 60's living in Lawton OK, and while not under the regular flight path for the Airport, it wasn't uncommon if the wind changed, to see a Connie with a load of FT Sill bound troops over the house making their downwind. Chalet, let's be careful or we'll tell our age.LOL

My resident mate is from Hong Kong and we spent Chinese New Year dinner at his family's compound in Kowloon one year, hard up against the last approach marker to 13 at Kai Tak. Every three minutes the house would shake, chop sticks would stop in mid air, conversation and chewing would cease as an aircraft (all international then) roared overhead, only to resume as if nothing had happened after it passed. Eerie for those of us who were foreigners, routine for family.

haha!

When I was real little I thought the planes flying over my house were volcanoes erupting in my backyard. Then I learned that's just the sound of freedom! Nowadays you can forget there's an approach above your head if you're not really paying attention.

I was sitting in the cellphone lot at MSP this summer waiting for my sister's flight to get in this summer... the whine from a JT8 cuts right through anything you might be listening to or thinking about... love it! Kind of an interesting contrast listening to those bad boys vs. the little Priuses Compass flies...

Well, if AA would sell that 2-3 million $$ CONDO in London, and who knows what other useless things, they could get a start on recovery? And Toby,I got your meaning of Booo!

I believe it's worth around the $17 million range. Sad to see AA and Eagle going through with this....I was hoping to land a job with Eagle towards the end of '12....hopefully they will restructure and start hiring pilots by then.

Tim:see my comment above; i really think it will be 1st quarter 2013 before the air clears or that I would feel comfortable going to work for them at least as a career. That said, I think Eagle will be but a shell by then, if at all.I really think Mesa is standing there licking their chops right now.

Can't say as I am unhappy to see those ATR's go, but as has been said down here, some of the RJ's are probably next. What is strange about the whole thing though and just more wrongheaded thinking on AA's part, IMHO,is messing with Eagle at all. Seems to me it was profitable, which was one reason they had a hard time finding anybody to look at it.
canuck44
canuck44 0
It needs to be completely recapitalized except for the CRJs in ORD...the ATRs got to the South when they iced up in the North. The ERJs are old and small. They will do better having one of the dedicated regionals rebrand to Eagle or Connector or whatever name they will pay some teenage marketing grad a fortune to think up with her thesaurus to name it. Off the books that way and accounting slight of hand. The landing spots in JFK and LGA have big value so they will be fun to watch on any deal.

I was talking to my crew scheduling buddy down there the other day. They knew these layoffs were coming, they just didn't know exactly when & how many. He said the fill in work would be touchy between now and then as the union will require them to go through the entire furlough roster prior to going outside and most won't want it anyway because of unemployment or other stuff they are doing. Watch and see who gets the contract for service and there you'll see the pilots go. That is how ASA made such a big expansion. When DAL did their thing a few years back and laid off a bunch of their pilots, ASA and all the other reqionals that could put them to work, but ComAir thumbed their nose and said"too bad, we ain't hiring them". Well, as DAL came back, ComAir contracts went away as they came due and ASA was prime beneficiary in picking up the slack. That ComAir HQ & terminal in CIN is but a shell of what it was. It is starting to come back a little but it has taken about 5 hard years and not anywhere near where it was.

Ever seen the "fishing(or bowling) excuse shirts" that list lame and stupid excuses for things? This is just the start for AA. ATR are loud, no arguement, and they just now are creating a problem?? Heard today about a "fuel shortage" for AA flights in South America? I am guessing it is a "payment shortage" but blame the fuel suppliers who will get stiffed on this bankrupcy lark. This will be sad and interesting. Hope the bonus pool is safe.
preacher1
preacher1 0
Haven't heard about that yet but any regular supplier will get stiffed on $ as that is unsecured and gone unless they do something special in the court. New suppliers will get paid OK, but you can't expect a credit extension from an old one when what's already out there is either frozen or gone. Court may make an exception there, but that will open the door to other unsecured.

People can say anythning they want about American (mismanaged, not caring for their pilots and workers in general, etc.) but after the two fatal accidents they had (MD80 in Little Rock and 757 In Cali, Colombia) they really enforced everybody to go by the book not deviate from the regulations which is reassuring for us passengers. Speaking about their regional services, I have flown everything they had from the noisy (but confortable) ATR, to the noisy and very uncomfortable Saab 340 and the regional jets (very uncomfortable). Sorry for the able and hard working pilots and flight attendants that are losing their jobs.
preacher1
preacher1 0
I had some good friends on that one in Little Rock. There was a tour group coming home and 4 that died were from KRUE. There is now a memorial plaza in downtown Russellville in memory. That was pilot error, pure and simple. Raining hard but he came in between storms up from KDFW; They said he overshot the runway but he forgot to deploy something that would have slowed him OK, forget just exactly what but NTSB zeroed in on it after listening to the CVR.

It starts and is not finished. MIA, SJU and ORD hubs are probably safe, but I would not like to be working out of JFK, LGA or LAX.

Mesa Airlines have capacity.
