Anyone remember where we parked the plane?

Übermittelt

81-year-old man, Hans Kopper, crash lands into a strip mall parking lot. Luckily he and his passenger escaped without injury. Guess the geezer correlated "strip mall" with "landing strip"? To the real debate; should older pilots be allowed to continue flying, despite thier experience? (www.huffingtonpost.com) Mehr...

Just to put it in perspective - how many fatal car crashes were there today and how many total car wrecks were there today. How come we never hear about those? Makes you wonder.

Why is it acceptable to disparage the pilot as a "geezer" because of his age? If he were black, or Hispanic, or blond would you use that to belittle him? Unless you have a time machine and you know for a fact that the investigation has already determined that the accident was a direct result of his age, then I suggest you try not to be so quick with the smart ass comments and wait for the facts. For all we know at this point, it's entirely possible that his experience enabled him to save a bad situation, in which case your characterization of him as a "geezer" won't exactly fit, will it, "Meredith"?

@Siriusloon Not discriminating there, just using harmless word play. Didn't know "geezer" was offensive....people can call me blonde, white, whatever they like. I am blonde and white soooo why would I take offense? It is what it is. All I was trying to do was A) share a neat story and B) gain some insight and education on the diversity of pilots. All in all, it was a good landing and I'm glad their safe. Simply wanted to share and get a discussion started.

I happen to be from Williamsburg and have many friends that are close to Hans. Obviously you are not a pilot or you would be commending this guy on doing a great job getting the plane down without injury to anyone. What youre saying is about the same as saying should women be allowed to fly cause they might not be strong enough to handle the controls in an emergency? The guy didnt "forget" or "mistake" a strip mall for a landing strip, he had an emergency situation that called for an emergency landing and he did so without injury or loss of life.

You are right, I'm not a pilot but I do love planes and aviation. Would like to learn more, hence the post. Just wanted to share a story and gian some insight. Obviously I am happy he is safe, I am pretty sure any person would be so I think that goes without saying. And sure, bring up the woman thing,..this wasn't meant to be discriminating so I could really care less. Wow, this is not a friendly community.

Apparetly the pilot did all the right things - because he go the plane safely onto the ground - if he's reading any of these comments I'd like to say good job sir, you did the right thing. Not every situation is 'text book,' and the more experience you have, the
better your odds of a good outcome.

Agreed! Amazing landing and to not stress under pressure like that is what makes me respect pilots like him. The more experience obviously the better, this is good feedback!

Don't be so hasty to blame the pilot's age; I doubt the engine decided to have problems because the person behind it was more advanced in years. He managed to get the plane on the ground with no injuries, I'd say that he did quite a good job.

Agreed 100%, Falconus! Blaming this accident on the pilots age is pretty ignorant. As you said, he got the plane on the ground in an emergency, without injuries. That's pretty commendable. Talking about his age like that just takes the attention away from his incredible emergency landing.

N758GY appears to be the Cessna 172 involved, but the Huffington Post article seems to have an incorrect model year. http://flightaware.com/resources/registration/N758GY http://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/wiki.php?id=139287
